He enlisted in the Nevada Army National Guard in October 2004, after which he was mobilized for Federal active duty for almost three years. As of April 2014, after being in a 2-year Veterans Administration program for Homeless Veterans, Hampton is officially no longer a homeless Iraq War veteran.

In May 2014 he graduated from the College of Southern Nevada with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Photography – Commercial Photography Emphasis. He has been studying at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas with in a double major in Art and English. He recently returned from spending a cold, rainy Spring 2017 semester studying at a university in southwestern France in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains.

After 16 years of desert in the American Southwest, and Southwest Asia, he still misses the Rocky Mountains, yellow aspens in the fall, running rivers, and a warm fireplace during snowy winters.

~ * ~ BLURB ~ * ~

The fireworks are about to begin as the sexual adventure of Rachel and Burt Markham continues. Small business owners and happily married couple of 20+ years, they live in the small town of Four Corners, Kansas. The year before, with the permission and encouragement of her husband, Rachel had the freedom to explore the depth of her sensuality through having her first Bull. After saying farewell to her Bull, Rachel and Burt settle back into the routine of small town life. Then, African-American frustrated artist and new fireworks territory sales manager Horus Grant arrives in Four Corners. He is searching for new sales territory for the Missouri-based company and wants to open a fireworks stand next to Rachel and Burt’s seed and feed store. Outwardly friendly and personable, he is plagued by hidden demons. Though based in near-by Wichita, Horus finds himself returning to Four Corners again and again, and not because of the fireworks stand. Rachel is also drawn to him and soon realizes she may hold the key to Horus’s slim chance of defeating his demons, of healing, and learning to live again.

~ * ~ EXCERPT ~ * ~

“Ten o’clock on a Saturday night.” He held his glass up and added, “Here’s to Saturday night, the 26th of April, in Boise, Idaho.”

After a gulp of his drink he stumbled outside to the small enclosed patio and plopped onto a lawn chair. Though it was the last weekend of April the nights were still cool.

“This is a hell of a note,” Horus mumbled. He held a shaky hand up against the starry night. He wasn’t black enough to disappear into the night as if he never was. More and more he wanted to do that. If he had been born closer to the time of his ancestor who was freed from slavery on a plantation in the Deep South, he might have been black enough to disappear forever.

Horus took another drink. It used to be alcohol helped him cope with the dreams—he often drank until he passed out. In the mornings he didn’t remember dreaming though he knew he had because of a headache and he was sweaty and exhausted. The alcohol wasn’t helping that much anymore. Though he passed out the dreams still found him, and worse, he remembered.

He swirled the liquid in the glass and took another drink.

A faint, pleasant scent wafted through the night. Roses. His next door neighbor cultivated award winning red, white, pink, and yellow long stem roses; to him the roses were no more than bee magnets.

Horus sighed and stared at the silent twinkling stars.

“Star light, star bright,” he mumbled and wrinkled his nose at the scent…

What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?

  5. Peggy July 18, 2017 at 7:35 AM

Do you write every day? Do you have a word goal for each day you write?

    Hi.

Sorry for running late. It’s been a hectic day so far. Anyway, to Jacey, thank you for hosting me today. I appreciate the opportunity.

Mai Tran, I’m not sure what the most unethical practice is in the publishing industry these days. I deal with very few publishers and I really don’t keep up with trends overall, though perhaps I should.

Peggy, unfortunately, I do not write every day. I do research and draft and tweak outlines for what I’ll be writing soon. But, generally I only write when the urge strikes me to do so. When I do write, there is no word goal – I simply write until I’m tired or I think I’ve put in a good day’s work.

And to everyone, thank you for commenting. I’m glad you enjoyed the excerpt.

Good luck with the Rafflecopter, and have a great week!

    Stan
