gods don’t like being challenged #UrbanFantasy #Romance @JamieMarchantSF @GoddessFish

Hey folks! Today I’m happy to introduce you to Jamie Marchant and her story The Bull Riding Witch!

~ * ~ BIO ~ * ~

Jamie began writing stories about the man from Mars when she was six, and she never remembers wanting to be anything other than a writer. Everyone told her she needed a back up plan, so she pursued a Ph.D. in American literature, which she received in 1998. She started teaching writing and literature at Auburn University. One day in the midst of writing a piece of literary criticism, she realized she’d put her true passion on the backburner and neglected her muse. The literary article went into the trash, and she began the book that was to become her first novel. She writes about the fantastic . . . and the tortured soul. Her poor characters have hard lives. She still teaches writing and literature at Auburn University. She is the mother of a grown son.

Daulphina’s father, the king of Asteria, has always wanted a male heir. Unfortunately for him, Daulphina’s magic means that will never happen unless her bastard half-brother displaces her on the throne. But she’ll take on all the gods herself before she lets that happen. He isn’t nice enough to be a good king.

But apparently, the gods don’t like being challenged because she’s flung across the void and into the dumpy old trailer and chiselled body of Joshua Killenyen, a rodeo bull rider from Alabama. With nothing to eat but Frosted Flakes and no knowledge how she got there, she better find a way home before she gets her head stomped in by the bulls she must ride. Or her brother will take the throne and reduce her people to slavery. Remember, he isn’t nice.

~ * ~ EXCERPT ~ * ~

And then, I woke up as a man.

I stared at the warm water falling over me. It had to be magic. Somebody magicked me into a man’s body. Dear gods, did that mean this hairy man was in my body? Was body-switching possible? Granny had never mentioned any such thing when she taught me everything she knew about magic, not that I’d ever been anything but a disappointment to her. I never had the raw power she expected of her successor. Or was my body empty? Or dead?

I was still staring at the falling water when Jocelyn yanked the stall door open. “Joshua, I told you you had ten minutes. Damn it, what’s wrong with you? You still have your boxer shorts on. Have you even washed yourself?” She turned the knob, and the water went away.

I stared up at her. “Miss, you have to believe me. I’m not Joshua.”

She put her hands on her hips. “Who are you, then? The queen of England?”

“No, I’m not a queen. I’m the crown princess of Asteria. I’ve never heard of England.”

She put her hand to her forehead. “Joshua, just how drunk are you?”

“I’m not drunk. This isn’t my body. Somebody magicked me into it.”

Jocelyn stared at me for a second. “I don’t know what you’re playing at, but it isn’t going to get you out of going to Meemaw’s.”

I rose abruptly. “I’m not going anywhere until someone explains what’s going on! Just how did I become a man?”

Carmen DeSousa writes stories brimming with romance, suspense, a hint of humor sometimes and, of course, a few Kleenex moments. All of her novels are sensual, but not erotic, gripping but not graphic and will make you cry, laugh, love, and hope.

Although her Creatus series clearly include supernatural beings, the paranormal dances on the edge of make believe. Carmen hopes that as you read, you’ll wonder, “Hmmm…what if?”

‘So I’m behind the times because I died a Victorian?’

Your cool gaze seemed to be sussing me out. ‘You don’t look Victorian.’

‘Didn’t exactly stay dead.’ I pushed away from the fireplace, jumping up to sit on the arm of the leather sofa. I scrutinized your serious features and those intent grey peepers. ‘You really don’t know anything about us Blood Lifers, do you? How we evolved or–’

‘I know enough.’

Surprised, I drew back. ‘As in, only good Blood Lifer’s a dead Blood Lifer?’

You shot me a sharp look. ‘You wouldn’t be here, if that’s what I thought.’

‘Alright then, as in, only good Blood Lifer’s one in shackles?’

Your mouth tightened into a thin line. ‘And what about humans? Do we come in small, medium or large?’

‘In America you can supersize.’ I grinned, but you didn’t return it: some birds have no sense of humour. Of course, Ruby would’ve clocked me for that comment. ‘Look, that’s not who I am now. I’ve been on blood abstention for fifty years.’

Your voice was so cold it could’ve given frost bite. ‘Good for you.’

‘Not asking for a medal, sweetheart. I just wanted you to know I don’t… Not First Lifers. Not for a long time.’

‘Makes no difference to me.’

‘It does to me. You’ve no idea how much.’

‘OK.’ You turned back to your laptop, opening it with an air of indifference. Then there was that blasted clack clacking.

I listened for a moment in silence. Then I couldn’t hack it any longer. ‘What does?’v

‘What?’ You didn’t stop typing or look away from the screen.

‘Make a difference to you?’

You didn’t even pause. ‘The profit margin.’

I asked JW Troemner, “What fuels you to continue writing?” and here is the response.

Hello, Jacey, and thank you so much for hosting me today!

Earlier you asked me what fuels me to continue writing. It brought to mind an experience I had recently, and I wanted to share it with your followers.

A while back I was working for a company that makes and grades most of the standardized tests taken by children in the USA (by the way, if you ever want to lose all faith in the education system, I recommend starting there). To prevent examiners from leaking answers, we weren’t allowed to have anything except for food and beverages with us while we worked. So naturally, I almost got fired because one of my managers found me with a pen.

When he demanded to know if I’d been copying questions, I showed him the notebook I had stashed in my purse. The only things copied from the test were a few inspired misspellings that sounded like fantasy names. The rest of the pages were crammed with with fragmented outlines and snippets of conversations and nonsense turns of phrase that sounded so absolutely perfect in my head that the thought of forgetting them was physically painful.

My manager told me that if it ever happened again I’d be fired, and I bowed my head and accepted the admonishment. For the rest of my contract, I struggled to focus on the drudgery while my head was buzzing with those same fragmented bits of story. It was like being in a cloud of mosquitos, and the only way to escape them was to catch each one and put them on paper for later. Otherwise they would keep repeating, over and over and over again.

I’ve had a bunch of jobs over the years, and I’ve always written during every spare moment of downtime—on paper towels, receipts, pay stubs, and on myself when I couldn’t get my hands on paper. But it’s never quite been so painful as when I wasn’t allowed to do it at all for eight hours at a time.

The thing that makes me write is the same drive that makes me eat and sleep—though I can go without food and sleep for a few days, if I need to. I’m not so sure about writing.

~ * ~ BLURB ~ * ~

Rosario Hernandez doesn’t ask for much. She’d like to sleep on a bed instead of a sidewalk, to know where her next meal is coming from, and maybe, if she’s really feeling optimistic, to get a girlfriend. More than anything, though, she wants her best friend Arkay to not murder anyone— because Arkay is a dragon, claws and all, and she has a penchant for vigilante justice. When Arkay’s latest escapade goes sour, Rosario gets stuck with a stolen van and a cooler full of human organs. Now they’re on the run, and it’s not just the cops who want answers. The owner of the cooler is still out there, and they want to replace what they’ve lost— by any means necessary.

~ * ~ EXCERPT ~ * ~

At the Precinct:

At least a dozen police officers had gathered in the hallway, their weapons drawn. Another half dozen moved along the walls of the interrogation room like a pack of wolves, watching for an opening in Arkay’s defenses.

My dragon crouched in the corner, snarling like an animal. The interrogation table had been torn into pieces and hurled through the one-way mirror. The ground was strewn with pulverized cinderblock and silvery crumbles of broken glass. Arkay’s handcuffs had been ripped apart, and the broken metal cut into her skin. Blood poured from her wrists, staining the twisted metal bar she brandished like a club.

One of the officers, a six-foot white guy who looked like he could bench press a horse, charged forward. She rushed forward to meet him, bending low to grab him by a thigh that was nearly as thick around as her waist. So fast I could barely follow it, she yanked him up and over her back, using his own momentum to hurl him into a wall. Blood darkened the fabric around his leg. I couldn’t tell if it was hers or his.

She snarled, and I ran past the last line of police into the tiny room. I stumbled between her and the fallen man, my hands outstretched.

“Arkay, it’s me!” I inched closer. She angled her body toward me, but her eyes kept darting to the officers around her. “See? They let me in. Everything’s okay now.”

She grabbed me by the wrist and yanked me into the corner behind her with a snarl.

Hey folks! Today I’m happy to introduce you to Tia Reed and her story The Grotesques!

~ * ~ BIO ~ * ~

Tia Reed loves nothing better than burying her nose in a story of her own imagining, cuddling her bossy cat and rescuing chewed pillows from her hyperactive dog. She takes every opportunity to do all three when she is not teaching English as a second language. Her other hobbies usually take a back seat but include trying to tame her beast of a garden, hiking and travelling. The latter has thrown her many interesting, sometimes hair-raising experiences, which she loves twisting into stories. She was born in Malta, but lives in Adelaide, Australia.

Discredited journalist Ella Jerome isn’t thrilled about working at Adelaide’s fanciful tabloid The Informer. So when zoologist Adam Lowell seeks her help in finding his missing cousin, she’s cynical of his claim a monster lurks near the Church of the Resurrection. The trouble is, solving the gruesome case could be her best shot at restoring her shredded reputation.

With her old instincts resurfacing, Ella combs the Port for clues. Experience tells her the only monsters are the human variety, and the bloodied stonemason certainly raises her suspicions. But when her investigation turns up everything from petrified remains to the headless carving of a dragon, the truth threatens to steal both her sanity and the man she’s falling for.

After all, gargoyles can’t be anything other than harmless stone. Or can they?

~ * ~ EXCERPT ~ * ~

A hammering echoed up the stairs. As the workman paused, they heard a yelp. It jolted them into jogging down into a small, unadorned chamber. The arches ringing it might have impressed if its grey stone blocks weren’t such a cold contrast to the dazzling limestone above. Across the chamber, the bold iron hinges on an oak door bled rust onto the stone. As if that wasn’t enough to give her the creeps, planks were nailed haphazardly across its width, as though after it fell into disrepair a child had made a clumsy attempt to fix it.

The hammering recommenced, resounding through the chamber from behind the door. After several beats, the workman stopped.

The church plunged into silence.

Adam knocked.

The hammering resumed.

When quiet fell once more, Adam banged against the wood.

The door creaked open. A hunchback, neck extended, peered out in enquiry. His dusty coveralls hung about his thick body as if he had suffered a precipitous drop in weight. Behind him, yellow light illuminated his workroom, throwing his skewed face into shadow.

Taken aback, Ella stammered a greeting. “We heard you working and were hoping to talk to someone about the church.” She hoped it didn’t sound like they wanted to join the congregation.

The hunchback moved his head, up and down, side to side, examining every inch of her body. Affronted, she buried her hands in her pocket and hunched her shoulders. She was about to make a stinging comment when the man spoke.

“Bitter, bitter,” he muttered, his voice husky. “No good, no good.”

Ella had the distinct impression he meant her. Unable to think of a retort, she blinked at Adam, who cleared his throat.

“I’m Adam Lowell. I’m researching bats in the Adelaide metropolitan area. The caretaker, Mister Genord, is aware of my project. My assistant and I were hoping to examine the bats in their sleeping quarters.”

The hunchback smiled, his mouth gaping through missing teeth. “Bats up. Tower.” With great effort he pointed a bloodied hand to the ceiling. His finger failed to rise higher than his head. “Up.” He nodded and closed the door. A few muffled scuffles preceded further hammering.

Ella shivered. “Do you think he cut himself?”

“It would explain the scream.” Noticing her discomfort, Adam flashed her a smile. “He looks harmless enough.”

“It’s not him. It’s damp down here.”

She left Adam to examine the door and walked under the closest of the arches which ringed the room. Trailing a hand along the grey stone, she made her way around the shadowed cloister. She could hear herself breathe, her lungs raspy with the moist air. The absence of an electric bulb was enigmatic, but the wicked axe hanging on the wall below the foggy window was downright ominous. It looked just the sort of weapon to break through a door.

“I can’t see anything suspicious here. Ready?” Adam queried.

“Yes. No!” She had just spied a glint at the back of the stairs.
