Wrong place, right time? ‘Fresh off the Starship’ #humor #WomensFic #SciFi @ann_crawford1 @GoddessFish

Hey folks! Today I’m happy to introduce you to Ann Crawford and her story Fresh off the Starship!

~ * ~ BIO ~ * ~

I’m a fun-loving, world-traveling, high-flying, deep-diving, and living-to-the-max author of eight books. When I’m not flying planes, scuba diving, climbing every mountain (on the back of my husband’s motorcycle) or riding the world’s fastest roller coasters, you can find me in my writing nest with a view of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains out the window. I’ve lived all over–from both oceans white with foam, to the prairie, and now to the mountain. Yes, a little backwards, but what the hey.

My bestselling and award-winning novels go as high and deep as I do—they’re profound yet funny; playful although poignant; heart-opening and heart-lifting; thought-provoking and inspiring; and edgy while universal. I’m also a screenwriter and award-winning filmmaker and humanitarian.

~ * ~ TOPIC du JOUR ~ * ~

I asked Ann Crawford, “What is the best and most rewarding thing you find about being a writer? Want to share what you think is the worst and most frustrating thing you find about being a writer?” and here is the response.

This is such a great question. The best thing about being a writer, for me, is all these wild, wonderful, way-out-there characters who come knocking on the doorway to my mind, saying, “Write my story!” How could I refuse?

I have to be a writer…there’s nothing else I would do (well, given that I don’t have a rockstar singing voice, LOL). In all honesty, though, it’d be like not breathing.

Writing is not the easiest of paths, however. I actually tried not writing for a while, trying the “practical” route. Ha! That worked like a charm—not.

The hardest part is the amount of time it can take to get established plus the seemingly endless marketing authors have to do, even when traditionally published.

My favorite part is hearing feedback from readers. Writing is the gift I love to give; when readers tell me about how my books have touched them, made them laugh, and lightened up their day, well…that is one of the best feelings of my life.

~ * ~ BLURB ~ * ~

Love to laugh? You’ll enjoy this feel-good tale.

A starbeing skyrockets to Earth from the other side of forever with a specific assignment: to help steer humanity away from the collision course it’s on. But we all know how travel can get drastically diverted–instead of landing in Washington, D.C., where she could assist on a grand geopolitical scale, she ends up in…Kansas!

Wrong place, right time? Join our shero on this whimsical journey as she pursues her purpose as well as discovers the beauty of life and love on Earth.

Matt hands her a large drink with a little mountain of fluffy white stuff on top, with stripes of brown dripping down the mountainsides.

“Here, got you extra whipped cream and lots of car’mul on top, just the way you like it.”

Missy takes a lick of the whipped cream and her eyes go wide. “Oh!”

“Well, yer not supposed to lick it like an ice-cream cone. Sip it.”

She does and then slaps her hand on the table.

“Missy! You okay?”

“Oh, my! How can you beings ever complain about anything?”

“How’s that now?”

“Nothing.” She takes another sip and moans again. Several customers seated nearby look over at her.

“Missy, sweetheart, can you calm yourself a bit?”

She takes a bite of the round treat on a stick he’d set down by her. The moans escalate.

“Geez,” Matt says, trying to sink farther into his seat, “I feel like I’m straight out of When Harry Met Sally.”

“Who’s Harry? Who’s Sally?”

“The main characters in one of yer favorite movies. You made me watch it at least half a dozen times.”

She takes another sip and bite. The moans escalate even more. By this time everyone in the café is looking at her.

“Missy! Perhaps we should eat these in the car.”

“Wherever you want!”

The customers in the café receive one more rendition of “Ohhhhhhhh!” as Matt leads her out the door and she takes another sip of her drink.

Okay, maybe it’s not thaaaat bad here.

~ * ~ ABOUT THE AUTHOR and BOOK ~ * ~

What is something you’ve lied about?
What is this, a Scientology audit? Just kidding—when I was nineteen and it was time to move from Ohio, I saw my extended family for the last time without telling them I would be leaving. It wasn’t that I didn’t want them to know, it was that I didn’t want them to argue with me about it. Still feeling the ramifications of that one.

Who is the last person you hugged?
My boyfriend.

What are you reading now?
Martian Time-Slip by Philip K. Dick, and Dimensions by Jacques Vallee—all this alien stuff, lately! That’s what writing sci-fi does to you.

How do you come up with the titles to your books?
Painfully. Titling the book is always the hardest part! But because with The Disgraced Martyr Trilogy and The Lightning Stenography Device (the book prior to the series) I’m writing what I hope to be psychedelic fiction, I wanted to give a wink to psychedelics with their names. When I say psychedelic fiction, I mean fiction which has psychedelic effects when properly meditated upon—not just a book that deals with drugs, like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Inherent Vice. Not that both aren’t excellent! But I mean, I want to create something like a more engaging version of old alchemical treatises. That’s what Shakespeare was doing, especially at the end: creating psychedelic, alchemical plays. Analyzing the Tempest through that lens will change your life!

Share your dream cast for your book.
Ooooh. Mads Mikkelsen for the Hierophant, please…as long as that happens and Michael Gira of SWANS does the music, I don’t care about all the rest! But if we could resurrect Stanley Kubrick to direct, well…

~ * ~ BLURB ~ * ~

By 4042 CE, the Hierophant and his Church have risen to political dominance with his cannibalistic army of genetically modified humans: martyrs. In an era when mankind’s intergenerational cold wars against their long-lived predators seem close to running hot, the Holy Family is poised on the verge of complete planetary control. It will take a miracle to save humanity from extinction.

It will also take a miracle to resurrect the wife of 331-year-old General Dominia di Mephitoli, who defects during martyr year 1997 AL in search of Lazarus, the one man rumored to bring life to the dead. With the Hierophant’s Project Black Sun looming over her head, she has little choice but to believe this Lazarus is really all her new friends say he is–assuming he exists at all–and that these companions of hers are really able to help her. From the foulmouthed Japanese prostitute with a few secrets of her own to the outright sapient dog who seems to judge every move, they don’t inspire a lot of confidence, but the General has to take the help she can get.

After all, Dominia is no ordinary martyr. She is THE HIEROPHANT’S DAUGHTER, and her Father won’t let her switch sides without a fight. Not when she still has so much to learn.

The dystopic first entry of an epic cyberpunk trilogy, THE HIEROPHANT’S DAUGHTER is a horror/sci-fi adventure sure to delight and inspire adult readers of all stripes.

The Light Rail

Cassandra’s absence was not her first discovery. That was her (officially) broken watch, whose blank face reflected her own bleary one. Then came the porter’s uniform, folded beside her unconscious body with such tight creases it looked as if it had been ironed: it smelled like the lavender of the woman who had pinned her against the cool metal of the train car to multiply the current’s kick. That, plus the ache in her stiff muscles, meant the woman was no hallucination. Dominia had escaped Japan, and now had a whole new level of problems. Who was she? Miki Soto. A card sat atop the uniform, its front embossed with a black-petaled, red-outlined lotus. Familiar symbol, but one she couldn’t place in her post-electric haze. She sat up to rub her head and neck with a pained sigh that turned into suffocation as her hand found the necklace gone from her throat.

Her palms were wet with sweat beneath her gloves. She stripped them off to feel around on her chest, then cried out to confirm Cassandra gone. Up the General sprang, then back down on hands and knees in search of her beloved’s remains. No trace.

Dominia knew where she was: with that same woman who had left the uniform. A disguise for the train, in exchange for her wife’s body. Cassandra! Oh, poor Cassandra, forever dying in Dominia’s mind, much as she forever stood in her flowing black dress, whose lace she smoothed while they waited outside the throne room of the Hierophant. Telling her, “You look beautiful, don’t worry; you’re so smart and funny, everyone will love you.”

brings safety to her dark world ‘The Becoming’ #Paranormal #Romance #Erotica @liliththorn @GoddessFish

Hey folks! Today I’m happy to introduce you to Lilith Thorn and her story The Becoming!

~ * ~ BIO ~ * ~

Born in Dundas, ON, Lilith Thorn is a restless wanderer. Her first move was to St. Catharines where she earned a Theatre degree at Brock University. Despite her parents’ wish that she would return home and work at McDonalds after graduating, Lilith refused and instead moved to Toronto to give acting the ‘Old College Try.’ After years of sacrificing her other passions for the stage and an empty bank account, she put away those dreams to say “Yes” to a different adventure. This took her to Dublin, Ireland for a few years where she met, fell in love with, and married another Canadian who took her to the one place she said she’d never live: Yellowknife. After nearly a decade in Canada’s Great White North, Lilith looks forward to further adventures with her husband and two children, just about anywhere.

Lilith Thorn is a pen name, the pseudonym used to protect the innocent; that is, so she hopefully never has to explain to her mother-in-law over dinner that she has written an erotic novel.

~ * ~ ABOUT THE AUTHOR and BOOK ~ * ~

What is the sweetest thing someone has done for you?
This Christmas, my husband waited until I fell asleep and then snuck back upstairs to replace my old stocking with a new one. It was handmade by his Aunt to match the ones our children have and his own from when he was a child. It added such a beautiful bit of Christmas magic to our morning.

How would you spend ten thousand bucks?
Travel. But where to? I’d love to go back to Dublin and show the kids where their father and I met. I’d also like to go back to Italy or France. Greece, maybe? Somewhere warm. Will $10,000 get you a trip around the world?

Where do you get your best ideas?
My best writing ideas come from play. I spend time playing with characters and scenarios in my head before I build anything permanent. I’ll imagine them in various scenarios before I land on the ones I like the best or have the strongest merit before I move them on to paper.

What comes first, the plot or characters?
Characters always come first. I love trying to understand people’s motives, so the people come first and then I figure out what they would do in the situations I dream up for them.

What does your main character do that makes him/her special?
Niamh perseveres. She lives in a time where escape is purely fantasy. The life she’s dealt is the one that she must live in, until death parts husband and wife. Despite the humiliation she suffers, the neglect, the torture she survives.

~ * ~ BLURB ~ * ~

Niamh is a good wife. She learned early on that crossing her husband had consequences. Living quietly in the shadowed cage he has formed around her, Niamh suffers his secrets and bares the scars they leave behind.

On the night of her biggest humiliation Caleb enters the ballroom changing Niamh’s course forever. He brings safety to her dark world and introduces her to the possibility of escape. Will Niamh’s love for Caleb be the key to her freedom or will it be her undoing?

Chapter Five

He closed the doors behind him and, without saying a word, beckoned me toward him. I knew what was to come next. This was a test. He had his fill while away, last night included. He had no pent-up desires, as was often the case when he was home for too long, when he couldn’t risk his local reputation doing what he liked best on any flesh but my own.

He eyed me suspiciously. “I have a gift for you.” He hinted toward his inner coat pocket with a tap of his finger. “Do you deserve what I brought for you?”

He was taunting me, treating me like the shallow puppet he thought I was. He believed I longed for him to come home with pockets filled with trinkets. If he only knew that what I longed for was for him to stay away.

“I have done nothing to deserve your mistrust.” I mustered up.

Motioning with his finger, he directed me to turn around and I obliged. Even with my back to him, I felt him approach. I swallowed the dread. After years of his advances, I should have built up a defense, but my arsenal only contained an off switch. Once the fear had been pushed down, I could become his doll. A barely-breathing version of myself, unwilling but able to do as she was told, if only to save herself the repercussions disobedience would entail.

I watched as though from above as he used his body, now pressed against mine, to guide and bend me over the writing desk. He put a hand on my head and forced it to the side, pinning me. With the other found a ‘sweet spot’ at the base of my neck, above my shoulder bone, and pierced it with his tool. Briefly losing my distance from this moment, I cried out in surprise. I had forgotten the sharpness of this exchange. His lips fenced in the flow of blood and as he tasted me. Every now and again, he would attempt to torment me with a whisk of his tongue. Pressing into my back was the gift hidden in his pocket. I recognized the shape of it immediately. A bottle of perfume. What else would he bring me from Paris, from anywhere? It was what he always brought me.

His lies may come back to haunt him ‘The Game Warden’s Mate’ #SciFi #Romance @AMGriffinbooks @GoddessFish

The Hunt. As the new Game Warden, Xrez Ym’ihla brings patrons from across the galaxy to track prey in a game built to enslave the weak and mate the strong. The business is a long running family legacy and Xrez is determined to succeed as his father had before him. He hadn’t meant to let one human occupy his thoughts, mind, and body.

His lies may come back to haunt him, but if he reveals the truth, he’ll ruin his chance to capture the heart of the one he wants.

The Prey. Esme Valdez had her entire life planned from an early age. As a chemist, her life was average and mundane, just the way she liked it. Until the impossible happened. Never did she imagine being abducted by aliens and forced to participate in a survival of the fittest game called The Hunt. If she survives and makes it to the end, she’ll be freed. If not, she’ll be forced to mate the one who captures her.

Esme is determined to win at all costs, even if it means putting her trust in a sexy alien who taunts her in the most delectable way.

Their love was built on betrayal. Can she trust him with her heart and life?

Read an Excerpt

Xrez watched the hologram and vividly remembered how prey reacted during the introductory phase. It didn’t matter the species, at some point, they would go into survival mode and divide into the groups they thought would give them the best chance.

“One of them has a beast,” Xrez noted.

It was small, oddly shaped and quadrupedal. It kept close to the pale female, protectively. Its fur wasn’t much different than his hair, short, but where the beast’s fur appeared smooth, Xrez and other Dar’E had wiry, coarse hair.

“Oh, yes! This should prove interesting. We’ve never had one of those in The Hunt before. The human called it a dog. The universal translator has input it as a companion, animal, protector.”

When the female got up to walk across the camp, the dog followed dutifully by her side. Xrez thought the description fit. As time went on the translator would input other information about the dog.

The female and her beast walked past another female. She appeared smaller than the first. She had skin as dark as the coarse hair covering his body. But his coloring was dull compared to the radiance of her. Her skin was vibrant under the sun, glowing with energy.

He’d only seen humans on holograms, none in the flesh. He’d always thought they appeared soft and mushy. Those weren’t attributes he wanted in a companion or mate. Instead of turning him off, this one made his belly stir.

Xrez reached out. His hand hovered over the hologram. Of course, he couldn’t feel anything, but that didn’t stop his longing. How would his fingers and claws feel against her skin? Would he scratch her?

He balled his fingers and brought back his hand. She was too soft for him to touch. Her skin was much too thin to withstand his claws. He would never be able to grip her butt or scrape his claws down her back while she rode him.

She lifted her hair off her neck and used her other hand to fan her back. Her hair was dark, almost black, but under the sun’s light, he saw shimmers of gold. It appeared soft and wavy, thick and long.

He decided then that he would run his fingers through it.

~ * ~ ABOUT THE AUTHOR and BOOK ~ * ~

Can you describe your dream home?
My day-job is in interior design, so I could go on for hours about the little details and brands I’d like to use. But to keep it short: white walls, lots of floor-to-ceiling windows for a maximum of light. Light brown floorboards. A big open kitchen with lots of storage space. Modern-looking bathrooms. A laundry room with enough space to hang clothes. Enough room that I could turn one into a gym. Oh, and a swimming pool.

If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?
If you show up unannounced, probably not much. But if I know you’re coming, you’re in for a treat. I don’t really spend the time when it’s just me, but when I have guest I go all in! So yeah, you’d be getting a completely home-made three course meal. Including an amazing desert (my specialty).

Tell us about the absolute BEST fan letter you have received.
The sweetest was from a man in Australia. He told me his sister liked my books and he wondered how he could buy a signed copy to gift to her for her birthday. I mailed him one, all the way away from Switzerland, and he wrote back a few weeks later to tell me the parcel got there just in time.

Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?
I love studying mythologies; it’s a hobby of mine and I read a lot about the subject. So I’d probably bundle up Greece and Egypt, and go see things for myself. I’d visit museums and historical sites like the Parthenon and the Pyramids.

Who designed the book cover for the book you are touring?
Miguel Ereza, a Spanish artist. I found him on 99Designs.com when I was looking for a cover for the first book in the Vale Investigation series. I fell in love with his style, so I went back to him for the cover of the second book. Here’s his page: https://99designs.com/profiles/2792967

~ * ~ BLURB ~ * ~

After narrowly preventing the destruction of Cold City, PI Bellamy Vale needs a rest. Or rather, he needs a plain and simple vanilla case—no monsters or otherworldly creatures involved!

When foreign businessman Eli Smith shows up at his doorstep with a thick wallet and a request to find his missing sister, Vale doesn’t think twice before agreeing.

If he’d known body-hopping demons and smoke monsters came attached to this job, however, he might have.

~ * ~ EXCERPT ~ * ~

So what if it was mid-February? The way I was feeling that morning, I planned to sleep until New Year came around again. Hells, as far as I was concerned, I earned it ten times over. I put an end to a string of gruesome killings, prevented the apocalypse our former mayor intended for us, and I’d stuck around long enough to clean up the mess she and her minions left behind. All that thinking took out the last bit of energy I had. I closed my eyes, found a way to lie down that didn’t hurt too much, and let sleep throw its soothing blanket over me.

And then someone knocked at the door.

I groaned at the wrong timing but kept my eyes shut. There was no way in Tartarus that I was getting back up again so soon. Whoever it was could get lost.

The knocking came again.

It was more insistent this time. I could hear a sense of urgency to the motion. I forced one eye open and frowned. The sunlight streaming in from the window was too bright for it to be morning and the angle it bounced off the floorboards was all wrong. I opened my second eye and glanced at the clock on the bedside table…Three in the afternoon.

“The hells?” I muttered, wondering where the day went while I shook my head to clear out the cobwebs.

The knock came a third time and I got up, grumbling all the way to the door. I didn’t bother to put clothes on or to tidy myself up before opening it. I was clad only in an old pair of sweatpants with a variety of cuts, bruises, and bandages on full display throughout my upper body. I hadn’t shaved in a week, and I was sure my hair was a sweaty mess of brown locks and dried blood.

Who knows, I thought, maybe the sight of me will convince my uninvited guest to let me get back to my coma.

If the man in the hallway took notice of my state, he didn’t let it show. He was tall and sickly thin under his rumbled three-piece suit. His pale skin provided some severe contrast with the purple bags under his brown eyes. He was somewhere between forty and forty-five. His angular face wasn’t familiar, and my frown deepened.

He looked like a potential client, the I-want-to-know-who-my-wife-is-banging type, but they rarely showed up to my private address unannounced. I made a lot of enemies in my professional career, not all of them on this side of the border, so my business card only listed my cell number.

The suit he wore appeared brand new, but I frowned more as I realized something didn’t add up. I was no fashion expert, but the matching of colors between the vest and shirt was off, brownish orange shirt covered by a purple jacket. Oh, and he wore a tie that matched his jacket…ugh. The light brown shoes were also at odds with the indigo blue pants. And there was the smell on the guy. It wasn’t a garbage smell—I’d been around enough of that over the last month to know it at first whiff—but there was a smoky quality about it that stood out.

I filed the information away for later and looked the man squarely in the eye. “What?” I croaked, my tongue feeling too thick and my mouth too dry.

“Bellamy Vale?” he asked, with an accent that wasn’t from around here…Middle Eastern, maybe?

I jerked my thumb at the bell next to the door. It had my name on it.

The man peered down at it perplexed, then pressed the round button. A shrill ringing shot out of the tiny plastic box above the door, and the sound sent sharp needles dancing through my brain. I winced in pain.

“Yeah—yeah, that’s me.” I rushed the words out, eager to make the noise stop. Damn, but my head was killing me. My odd gentleman caller took his finger off the button to look at me again.

“I need your help,” he said, “to find my sister.”

I needed help too, preferably in the form of another round of painkillers. But that was going to have to wait. I waved my potential new client inside.

Alex is haunted by visions of the dying, but now it seems the ghosts he’s seeing are real as well.

In this sequel to ALEX and THE SHED, Alex wonders if he’s seeing ghosts. His friend Justin has bought the Fulton place, a beautiful old mansion on the edge of Oakton. But something’s wrong in the house. Alex has visions of a small boy, trapped in the basement, and a man at the top of the stairs who won’t let him leave.

And Logan Fulton has come to town, Helen Kramer’s cousin, a psychic medium who wants something from Helen, whatever the cost. He and Helen had spent time in the Fulton house as children and Alex suspects Logan has something to do with the spirits now awakening in the old mansion. But whether Logan is calling them forth or if something else is controlling them, Alex can’t be sure.

The child’s spirit calls to Alex, as do others trapped in the house. There is a dark entity holding them there, keeping the child forever in the basement, the others for his amusement. But Alex has never believed in ghosts, so what is really going on? As he strives to learn the boy’s secret, his friends are one by one pulled to the Fulton place and put in danger while Logan works against Alex, having an agenda of his own. Will Alex be able to solve the haunting of the old house, or will he and his friends be taken one by one, doomed to walk the dark hallways forever?

Read an Excerpt

“So, Alex… What’s up?” he drawled, shaking his head when Alex gave him a confused look. He waved his hand at Alex’s clothing and Alex glanced down. Dark color flooded his face, and he plucked at his shirt, coughing as dust rose up around him.

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking,” Alex said quietly. He sounded humiliated, not meeting Justin’s gaze. Justin could have kicked himself. He hadn’t meant to make him feel self-conscious.

“Not a problem,” he hastened to say. “Just wondering what you’re doing under my house.”

Alex glanced at him, eyes dark with emotion, definitely troubled. “I had to get in…” He covered his face with his dirty hands, voice catching on a ragged breath. “Give me a minute. This one’s hard. He’s so scared…”

He began to shake, obviously fighting for control. A sob escaped him, and Angie flung an arm around his waist despite the dust. “Hey, we’re here. Everything’s okay.”

They waited, and Justin unclenched the fists he hadn’t known he’d made, his hands sore.

Taking a deep breath, Alex looked up at them, and his expression turned puzzled. “What’s going on? Justin, you look like you’ve seen a…ghost.”

“I think he has, but he won’t tell me,” Angie said, frowning at Justin.

He tried to shrug it off. “I thought I saw something… A little girl.”

“Oh, her.” Alex looked unimpressed. “She’s just residual, a memory of a girl who once lived here. No consciousness. Nothing to be afraid of.”

“Oh really?” Justin said dryly. “Well, she scared the crap out of me.”

She now lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play. Dianne says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house with a fire crackling on the hearth and a cup of hot coffee in her hands, which kindles her imagination.

Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.

Read an Excerpt

Sirens wailed all around me and I was well aware something was terribly wrong. Maybe my first clue should have been that I couldn’t feel anything; everything was numb. It was as if I had suddenly become weightless, and everything was pitch black. Convincing myself it was time to open my eyes, I summoned the strength to peel my eyelids back to realize I was staring down at my own contorted body. I heard my heart beat loudly in my ears. Panic overwhelmed me as I tried to process what I was seeing. Thunder continued to clap loudly overhead while the rain splattered the lifeless version of me, as well as everyone else looking on. Paramedics were rushing to my aid in what seemed like slow motion. I could hear muffled screams from police officers telling the crowds to move back.

I felt a firm tapping on my shoulder, and turned abruptly (although, without a body, I’m not sure how) to see a stunning, albeit pale young woman in a tattered royal blue dress. She was soaking wet, and the pained expression in her sapphire eyes and blue coloring of her skin and lips told me we were both dead. I was wondering if she had been hit, too, if we had both tried to rescue the dog. I saw no other body around other than my own. Where was her body? I opened my mouth to speak, to ask what on God’s green Earth was happening, but no words would form. I studied her meticulously, noting how delicate her features appeared. She seemed pixie- like, even though she was dripping wet.

Just as I was beginning to feel mesmerized by her, she turned to leave. The back of her snowy white hair was encrusted with mud and leeches. My mouth was agape in horror, and the screams I tried to form wouldn’t project from my throat. Darkness descended upon me as the radiant girl standing before me faded with it.
